I want my $700 billion back.

I don't get the part about how since an oversight board has not yet been created, Paulson is just merrily handing out the cash according to his own internal stipulations. These include no to toxic mortgages but yes to GE. Except that GE has never paid into the FDIC to the best of my knowledge. Of course, what do I know? At least now they'll be able to give Rachel Maddow a raise!

So, essentially we have a situation where Wall Street has looted Boomer retirement funds, and Boomers aren't even getting a desk calendar out of it.

Jack Welch, of course, thinks the auto industry should not be bailed out.

Me, I'm just an ant. It's almost certain someone's gonna step on me and squash me dead. To pass the time until that happens, I've been reading a lot about British history in the 15th century. I think I have problems. Richard II, now he had problems.

I find it amusing that I agree with Welch which is amazing. I also find it amusing that the media fixes on the 700 billion bailout. That bailout is just a decoy, as the week before, the Fed pumped over 850 billion into the system without even a footnote in the paper. In the past 3 months, the Fed has pumped in over three trillion into the banking system....I'm not including what the other central banks have done. The world is awash in money, which has become a rather abstract concept as of late.

All of this worthless money is going to come home to roost at some time.

You're smart about money; I'm not. Explain to me what's going on (if you have the time...)

I'll write a post this weekend over on my LJ regarding what's really going on regarding money and markets.

i have a very off-topic question for you that alice and i were discussing this morning-

do you think jackie kennedy would have been on birth control in the late 1940s before she was married?

Yes, I do. She was Catholic but had a European (necessarily pragmatic) attitude toward religion.

i didn't even think of it from the angle of religion- but that would have been a big deal! my main idea was that she wouldn't have bothered to put herself on it and/or it would have been framed as only being something you did if you had no intention of getting married any time soon/were more of a 'career girl', which i don't think she had in mind. but that would have been a very american framing of the picture, you're right. and because she was also in europe for most of the time during/between college and marriage, she definitely could have fallen into the idea there.

this all started because of a photograph of her post-college where she looks heavier than usual, by the way. alice brought up birth control, which i never would have even come up with on my own. but then again, i never even really think about it now.

Well, of course, she wouldn't have had access to birth control pills -- they had not yet been invented. She would have used a diaphram. (Have you & Alice read Mary McCarthy's THE GROUP? If not, you should. Very well written account of what college must have been like for women of Jackie's generation.)

My mother is one of those type of girls in THE GROUP.....now she's a candidate for a padded cell:)

McCarthy's book defined her generation.

Which one was your mother? Not Lacy, I hope. :-)

I think she was the girl from Chicago. My mom went to Smith, so I'm really surprised that she ever got married:)

However, I think I read that book in about 1977, so my memories of it are foggy.

One of the issues I have always had with politicizing sexuality is that for many people homosexuality is more a developmental phase than a lifestyle choice. Certainly that's true of a lot of Brits as well as Seven Sisters alumna... ;-)

duh! i can't believe neither one of us realized that- no wonder i was struggling for a horizon of expectations about the birth control pill during that period. the closest i could get was a vague memory of a teacher getting fired for distributing them at wellesley in mona lisa smile (whether this is actually that accurate for the year it was supposed to be, i have no idea! i can't even remember what year it's supposed to be- i just know it was around a decade after)

and no, although i've intended to read it for ages! references to it pop up everywhere. i'll also tell alice.

ohh!! i think we should too!

this probably sounds very snobbish, but i just don't think (most) other people like her for the same/right reasons that you and i do
