I honestly don’t know what to think or how to feel.

Mobs are nuts. Mobs are dangerous. That they’re triggered by just cause doesn’t change their underlying insanity or danger.

Mobs are particularly nuts and dangerous in the middle of a pandemic.

It will be sobering to watch the incidence and mortality rates in the above-mentioned cities fourteen days from now.

African Americans were already dying at far higher rates from the virus. When you layer in the exposure to Sars-cov-2 virus by rioters and protestors, it seems to me that you are actually watching people self-destruct, ironically while affirming the importance of their own lives.

Of course, I suppose, the majority of those infected will not die. So maybe this is a fast track to herd immunity. Who knows?

Protests and riots are the actions most calculated to focus attention on a problem that keeps repeating itself over and over again. But do they solve the problem? What would solve the problem?

[personal profile] gracegiver posted a video in which Trevor Noah rather astutely analyzes the various ways that George Floyd’s death represents a breach of the social contract.

Noah spends a good chunk of the analysis on the Central Park incident—and here, I could feel myself actually being triggered (and, yes, I hate that word) because what woman living in New York City has not had the experience of being scared to death by the looming presence of a large male stranger?

Is the color of the male’s skin a factor?

I’d like to say, No.

But if I’m being entirely honest, I’m Obama’s white grandmother crossing the street on that one.

So, you know. If not guilty, not entirely innocent, either.

Anyway, I can’t take any more politics or pandemics. I donated to an NYC bail-funding go-fund-me for protestors ‘cause there but for the grace of God goes Max or Robin or your kid, but now I’m gonna check out, retreat entirely into my own little world of adorable animals and adorable plants:

Adorable Mr. Bunny! Durer-esque, no?

That Central Park woman did not seem in the least threatened herself (I realize you were talking about *your* self, not her, but just--thinking of the incident). Putting the racism aside, I can't STAND people who have decided that rules don't apply to them and then get super aggressive when they're asked to obey them. What the hell??

The Trevor Noah video is good.

Love your Durer rabbit and your goslings.

Did you actually watch Chris Cooper's footage of Amy Cooper? I understand stranger danger, but if you watch how Amy Cooper behaves on camera, it's as Trevor Noah says. She escalated herself, and she chose to do so, just as she chose to walk her dog off-leash in a park where there are leash laws.

Albany had its larger peaceful protest yesterday afternoon, plus some property destruction last night. Saw some boarded-over businesses today on my ride home from work.

I also saw a lot of people wearing masks and social distancing at the bits of protest I glimpsed yesterday in Albany.

For me it is always the white men who make me nervous. Just look at the people in this country who have perpetuated the worst violence. A white male has to do a lot of work to earn my trust.
