My Intermediate English class is mostly Central Americans.

Mexicans. Guatemalans. One El Salvadorian. One Romanian.

The Romanian showed up last night. And two of the Mexicans.

“It’s been like that all week,” Lois Lane said when I drove her to her bus stop. I should have driven her home. But she lives 15 miles away, in Wappinger’s Falls. And I was feeling demoralized.

“Are they… undocumented?” I asked.

“One assumes,” Lois said. “We don’t ask.”

“No,” I said.

“Word on the street is that they’re gonna use the information they collected for the DREAM Act to round them all up, send them back,” Lois said.

And this is why you should never, ever trust the American government, I thought. Not when it’s preaching hope and change; not when it appoints the Poster Boy for alt.right white nationalism as its chief strategist.

I deactivated my Facebook account for a whopping ten hours last night.

But then I realized: Now, more than ever, the world needs Exciting Cat News – to combat the essential dog-eat-dog nature of social media.

Problem is that I find the HRC apologists just as irritating as I find the Trump gloaters – my “friends” feed includes both – although certainly the HRC apologists have the morally superior edge right now.

But they’re so fucking irritating.

I want to slap them.

I post an article from The Washington Post that opines Bernie Sanders Could Have Won – not that I necessarily believe that; in fact, I think it’s highly unlikely that a self-described “socialist” could have carried the Midwest.

The Hillary apologists descend upon me like harpies.

Stop victim shaming HRC!!!! they demand.

A phrase like “victim shaming” offends me on so many levels. As a practitioner of the English language; as a human being who believes that unless you’re naked in a gas chamber, you probably dropped at least a few of the crumbs in that trail of bread crumbs leading from there to here.

Always one to look toward that silver lining for fashion-forward choices in sheep’s clothing, I’m thinking, Well, at least during a Trump Presidency, I will never have to hear the words “trigger warning” or “privilege” again.

Actually, the worst thing is that I was so looking forward to all the white noise turning off on November 9. The election will be over, I thought. I will not have to deal with this massive societal meltdown anymore!

I’m handing in my resignation to the Gentlewomen’s Society for Prognosticators and Prestidigitators today. Before they move to impeach me.

Well there really should be angst over the election not because of the polarization or Trump's win but because 25.5% of the electorate chose our leader and yet the argument is this is unfair because Hillary won 25.7%. The real issue/question is how bad does it have to get before the millennials and minorities participate at the same level as older/white voters. The climate issues we are sure to bumble now won't hurt the folks that participate nearly as much as the ones who don't. I feel like at least 60% of the protesters are really angry with themselves for not voting. A lot of the coverage with Brexit I heard the same thing. The kid with the visa working in France is SOL but he didn't vote either so...

Yes, my XHusband (who's probably also my best friend) has been railing to me about this. "In Australia, it's against the law not to vote! The fine is $600!"

I think forcing people to vote would only exacerbate what Michael Moore calls The Jesse Ventura phenomenon.

I do think if people don't vote, then they don't get to complain about election results.

I agree forcing people to vote is not the answer and I also agree we need a more educated electorate. I just wish I knew how we get people to engage and participate. Although it was very frightening to see such long lines when we have more than a week of early voting in NC. I couldn't help but wonder what the state would do if everyone did go to the polls.

The HRC apologists are part of a group accustomed to things going their way and their opinion being regarded as virtuous. So their righteous indignation is unbearable because it's all wrapped up in their privilege. This too shall pass. What's crazy is those who will be most harmed by the election are doing what they always do, figuring out plan B (saving for a 50% down payment, leaving the U.S., becoming involved at the local level (moral Mondays protests x10).

One of the most strident people on my FB flist is my first husband's present wife who for various reasons, it's prudent to remain friendly with.

And I swear! She fuckin' stalks me! Any time I post something that's not Hillary hagiography, she posts reams and reams and reams about what a wonderful person Hillary is, and how anybody who didn't vote for Hillary should be drop-kicked into the lowest circle of hell!

Of course, I didn't vote for Hillary. (No worries - I didn't vote for Trump either.) But I don't tell her that.

I do think the liberals have finally woken up to what I have been complaining about for the past few years. (1) the feeling that I must choose between the side that’s bigoted against me and the side that’s bigoted against everybody else. (2) the fact that complaining about if Jenifer Lawrence is paid the same as her male costars is of little concern to the people making minimum wage. But I fear this election too dire a price to pay for those wake up calls.
