Saw an otter swimming so close to shore yesterday that Milo could have waded in and caught it. What was an otter doing so close to the shore? The beach has huge orange caution signs posted on the dunes warning prospective swimmers of bacterial contamination. Didn't seem to deter them any. Nor were they put off by the low-drifting fog. Hoards of tourists, shivering in their bright Tahitian design swimwear, doggedly attacking those gray, contaminated waves - ya gotta luv it! The human spirit! So indomitable.

When the smoke cleared, the store turned out to have grossed $14,000 in July and this is a respectable amount, only slightly below my optimistic projections. We had a thousand dollar day yesterday. Also had one of those karmic interactions with a complete stranger - a woman, maybe my age, maybe a few years older, who had once been drop-dead gorgeous and still had the most large and luminous dark blue eyes I have ever seen. I loved her on sight. And two seconds into a discussion on the relative merits of Marie Sharp's green habanero versus Marie Sharp's carrot habanero, she exclaimed, “I really, really like you!” and I thought: okay! We knew each other before. Though the details of that other life have vanished, the connection lingers. Somewhere, some time, some how, we were kind to one another.
