Outlining and Crawling on the Floor
Jan. 28th, 2016 09:42 amSomewhat sunnier mood today. Outlining and spending hours on Tumblr stalking visual prompts is so much easier than writing! And it gives you the same warm, virtuous afterglow. Though not the word count.
On the Getting-Old-Sucks front, I seem to have developed tendinitis in my shoulder so it’s a minor owie every time I raise my right arm. Fortunately, I’m not called upon to do the Seig Heil salute very often.
I started working with my new ESL student. Also from China. The fabulous Lois Lane kept telling me how difficult the Pakistani student was – “My gut just says you wouldn’t like her!” And since Lois Lane is rapidly becoming my New Best Friend, I decided to go with her gut.
Fang-Hua (Not Her Real Name) doesn’t speak a single word of English. Very, very different teaching challenge than Summer. I love charades and have no compunctions whatsoever about crawling around on floors and tables, making an absolute fool out of myself to act out words, so I had her speaking in rudimentary sentences by the end of our first lesson. And got congratulatory email from the Literacy Connections staff

Date: 2016-01-28 05:02 pm (UTC)Yep. Just spent 15 minutes looking at de-motivational posters. Why, internet, why? I could have had brunch. I could have taken a shower. But no. I read a bunch of unfunny jokes attached to stupid pictures. I don't even know how any of this even started.
So, politically incorrect question: Is Lois Lane married? I mean, did she fall in love with some dude named Lane and change her name. Or did her parents do that to her? But on the bright side, it's probably impossible for exes to find her online.

Date: 2016-01-28 10:45 pm (UTC)One of us needs to create a character named Lois LaRue which is not quite the same as Lane, but close enough.

Date: 2016-01-28 06:37 pm (UTC)Winters are rough there in upstate NY. When I first got to Drum I had a doctor tell me to start taking Vitamin D, one capsule in the fall and summer and two in the winter and spring months. "I tell everyone here to take it. Everyone in this place needs more Vitamin D," she said.
Anyway, I hope you feel sunnier soon. I used to feel so damn grey come January/February there.

I think it's a great idea for you. If you taught in Indonesia, it would give you a great opportunity to meet some of the people who live there. Otherwise, your social circle will all be people you meet on base.
It's been a really odd winter here in upstate New York. No snow to speak of -- that last much-hyped storm just swiped the coast. I can count the number of days it's gone below freezing on my fingers and toes. I think I'm melancholy by nature. Some times more than other times.
