Got incredibly ill in the middle of Sunday night, some random stomach thing that woke me up and kept me up for many hours. I was more-or-less fine when I woke back up way after 9am, but decided to use the midnight sickness as an excuse to do absolutely nothing on the official holiday but watch the incredibly dark, brooding and depressing BBC drama What Remains -- which I highly recommend for anyone looking for a way to come down from a manic episode of bipolar syndrome -- and read more of my bad novel. Oh, and play with my cats, and nibble dry stone ground wheat crackers.

I was shocked, shocked, shocked that I could apparently enjoy spending time this way without bestirring myself to go for a walk or do One Meaningful Thing. But apparently I could.

Good for you!

What did you think of the ending of What Remains? I found it completely over the top, a real shame.

PS You have renewed your account! I can read comments again :-)

The ending was waaaay over the top, I agree. The first three episodes were seriously creepy and well done though, I thought. Apparently the story was based on an actual case -- the death of a woman called Joyce Carol Vincent. I find a woman vanishing without anyone noticing quite an indictment of contemporary life -- in much the same way that the murder of Kitty Genovese several decades ago in full view of about 10 other people was.

The well-known Kitty Genovese story not only isn't true-- it was the product of lazy reporting. No neighbors were interviewed for that first story.

There were several emergency calls, several people tried to get the killer to leave by saying they'd called the cops and there was no one who had the vantage point to see (or hear) the attack from start to finish.

The true scandal ought to be the inexcusably long response time on the part of the NYPD.

Literal truth of the Kitty Genovese story is irrelevant. It's morphed into an Urban Cautionary Tale, a trope. I like to think that I would intervene if I saw someone being assaulted on the street, but of course, one never knows. I know I'd call 911 -- was that even an option back in Kitty Genovese's time? I don't know.

Kitty Genovese was pre-911. I think people had to call the precinct.
