There seem to be Two Theories of Sleep. Both are time conservation techniques of sort.

According to the first theory, you should sleep as much as possible because people who sleep more live longer. Scientific fact! Thus while sleeping nine hours a night may mean you only have 15 hours a day to do whatever it is you do when you're not asleep, you have [Your Arbitrary Number Goes Here] years tacked on to the end of your life.

The other theory is that there are only 24 hours in a day so why should you waste them sleeping when you could be [Your Arbitrary List of Activities Goes Here]? True, you'll die sooner, but you will have gotten so much more done!

I'm definitely a proponent of the first theory. I like to sleep. I also like to get up at 4 A.M. and do my own creative thang for a few hours before I have to jumpstart the day's practical activities.

At the barbecue last night, there was someone else who keeps my hours, Cassandra's friend Ray. Ray's a composer. A few months back, I went to a concert where one of his pieces was being debuted – it was really a marvelous piece, it blew me away, in fact. It was an intricately orchestrated piece for brass and winds that evoked an Amazonian jungle, as unlikely as those instruments might seem in the context of an Amazonian jungle. Ray has also seen ghosts and so have I, so now I'm wondering if those three things – odd sleep hours, a need to create that has little or no immediate payout, and the ability to see ghosts – are connected. I would have liked to talked more about this to Ray, but he promptly began nodding off in his chair around 9 P.M.

Ray's wife Lauren is quite delightful too, as were Mike and Stephanie, and Debbie and Marty, Cassandra's other guests. DeeDee popped in too – she was pickpocketed on the way over! So all in all, a delightful evening. Cassandra really has a talent for organizing social events. I had a very pleasant time, which was good because otherwise I would have been quite melancholy: Memorial Day was always a big weekend for the Little Store, so I've been thinking about Monterey quite a lot over the past three days – my store, my life, my dogs on the beach…

Monterey…

I can't really think about Monterey very much. I get so sad, I'm dysfunctional. I channel it into the Steinbeck book, so I suppose it's a good thing I'm working on that.

I spent most of the rest of the weekend finishing up the travel pieces for [Name of Big Travel Website Goes Here.] It was kind of like writing a Saturday Night Live skit. My piece on North Korea read something like, Visit the famous Pyongyang Botanical Gardens and admire the Kimilsungia orchids, a reflection of the peerless character of Kim Il-Sung! Pyongyang has the most non-violent nightlife in the world of any capital except Reykjavek! The Juche Tower is adorned with magnificent bronze statues of Kim Il-Sung and Kim Jong-II that are 25 feet high! Etc, etc.

It does not take much to amuse me, and that is a talent that has stood me well in this life.
