It's not that I don't care about Tragic Shootings in Connecticut That Left 28 People, Many of Them Under the Age of Six, Dead; it's just that I have been saturated with grief these past two weeks. I'm hanging on the line, trying to dry.

It's also that I'm really fucking tired of conversations that turn into pretexts for gun control arguments.

Hello! If your first reaction upon hearing about the deaths of 20 innocents is to launch into a tirade about the 2nd Amendment, either pro or con, you really need to reexamine your priorities.

Other than that… Well. Those guns did not levitate and float on their own toward that elementary school.

I'm not really sure why the U.S. has such a high incidence of these types of events, but I suspect it has more to do with the way the media beats the drums and tries to stir everyone into a state of absolute frenzy that imprints on the minds of mentally unstable individuals than it has to do with gun ownership.

Full disclosure: I've never shot a gun in my life, and I'm in favor of bans on automatic weapons. But I think the government needs to get out of the harm reduction bizness.

Other than that… It's been sunny and beautiful the last few days, but today it's going to rain which almost certainly means I will be lapping up the dregs of the Draft of Despair.

Also, I spent yesterday researching the history of castrati opera singers at the behest of a client (don't ask.) The Last Musico, a soloist with the Sistine Choir, lived well into the 20th century. You can hear him here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Alessandro_Moreschi.ogg

I propose that the media "can help us grieve", by endlessly reporting every detail of the killer and his crime, but they then be prohibited from selling any advertising and running commercials on the days that they choose to do this.

Completely agree that the media handles these situations in ways that make it likely to happen again. I keep thinking about the whole journalistic stance on reporting suicide. They don't want to encourage it so they don't report it. OK?!?! I can't believe that there has not been a new position about coverage of these type of events. If some crazy wants to publicly go nuts with the guns our media is doing a great job of showing what the results will be. Mass. Media. Attention. National. Attention. From. Everyone.

Aside from that, for me it doesn't really matter if it's one or twenty people who are killed. It's sort of a statistics and probability thing more than an omg-that-just-happened-what-does-it-all-mean kind of thing. When someone is killed like that, it's tragic. Unfortunately this shit happens all the time. I hate the way the media and individuals attach all sorts of agendas and meaning to stuff like this.

And, as if I haven't written enough, I really hate how the news has become a complete competition to break the story first with ZERO regard for getting things correct. There were so many errors to this report it is ridiculous. He killed his dad. No he didn't. It was his brother. No it wasn't. Yes it was. No it wasn't. His mom worked at the school. No she didn't. Yes she did. No she didn't. Maybe she did. The shooter had a mental illness. No it's autism. No it's asperger's. No it's a personality disorder. Holy clusterfuck. People are going around retelling this event without a clue of what happened. Forming opinions and analysis without a clue. It's disgusting to me. The quote mistakenly (how does that happen??) attributed to Morgan Freeman was on point and he should of said, yeah that wasn't me but RIGHT ON! I AGREE.

BTW, I am so so so very sorry for what has happened with your son's friend. I know from reading your journal that you felt a connection to him. And I'm sorry for the extra turbulence it brings to your relationship with your son. If I was standing next to you I would give you a really big hug, unless of course that would make you feel uncomfortable.

Thank you so much for sharing what you share. And for having your perspective. I appreciate it very much.

Thank you. And you're so-o right, amplitude is a bizarre criteria in these situations: One person, 20 people, it does not matter. It's a rent in the fabric.

Amen.
The worst thing for me about the past decade is that I no nonger trust the national media. About anything. If they warned me to barricade my door because a sniper/bomber/ted bundy/nancy pelosi was in my front yard -- I would go outside to check.
