Although I can't help thinking this is typical NYT over-intellectualization. We don't eat meat because there's an ethical system behind carnivory. We eat it because that's what omnivores do.

Really? The contest looks interesting to me except I just can't figure out how "ethics" has anything to do with eating meat. I mean, does "ethics" have anything to do with moving your bowels? Or any other body function? No! So it's kind of a false rhetorical equation.

I'm thinking of entering it to except I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around the notion that meat-eating impinges in any way upon ethics.

The two major arguments are that it's cruelty to animals (e.g. would you treat a human the way you did an animal to be able to eat it) and how raising livestock for consumption has contributed to global warming.

Those are the arguments for vegetarianism.

The contest wants you to argue the ethics of eating meat.

Oh I know, I was playing devil's advocate...unless you were asking the opposite? I'm a meat eater and I've long held fast to two very strong arguments in favor of.
