Why Depression Is Good Plus RTT Makes the Cut

Dreamed I was talking to one of the minor bodhisattvas, gravely concerned over what he saw as the over-prescription of pharmaceutical antidepressants. We were sitting in a grey tunnel in a kind if souk. “People are supposed to get depressed,” he explained to me. “It’s the sign that their souls are evolved enough to opt out of the cycle of reincarnation. If they don’t get depressed, they’re stuck in the material world forever.”

As far as RTT is concerned the big thing that happened yesterday was that Mass Effects 3 came out.

As far as I was concerned the big thing that happened to RTT yesterday was that he got into the SUNY Purchase Creative Writing program. Fairly selective school so I am psyched. He’s launched. The hard work paid off. I hope he decides to go there.

Purchase is the State University of New York’s art school. It’s most famous as an acting school – Edie Falco went there. So did Parker Posey, Melissa Leo, Ving Rhames, Wesley Snipes, Josh Harnett, Stanley Tucci – the list is so long they’re referred to collectively as the Purchase Mafia. It’s also a big music school.

RTT’s first choice is actually – of all unlikely things – Sarah Lawrence. I think he picked it because he wants to live in NYC and he rather naively thinks Yonkers is NYC. Personally, I think he’d have a very hard time at Sarah Lawrence since the kid, quite brilliant, has no discipline whatsoever and would die before he'd attend an 8am class. Sarah Lawrence has a reputation for rigorous academics. I also think he’d have to have a huge amount of financial aid in order to attend, a large chunk of that would be student loans, and I’m not sure he’d make it through all four years. Worst case scenario: He’d be a dropout facing $50,000 worth of student debt.

Purchase with its edgier student body and more relaxed academic standards just sounds like a better fit.

But what do I know? I’m just his mother. He gets to make the choice.

I have shared my thoughts with him, but when you're dealing with a stubborn 17 year old it's almost better to keep yr mouth shut, you know? 'Cause whatever you recommend, they're gonna want to do exactly the opposite.
