I am about to leave for Larkin Street where I will spend a few more hours throwing away junk; thence off to Santa Cruz to be feted by the tag team of Annie, Stew and Max. I would actually rather be spending the day alone, but that’s just because I’m pathologically depressed. Isolating is ba-a-a-a-ad! I just hope their sympathy isn’t too cloying. My new mantra (replacing I can only do what I can do): It is what it is.
Many high points from last week but I think the most vivid was wandering through the high, peeling fences of a mammoth Victorian, and stepping backwards in time. Really! It was like a commune in Mendocino, circa 1975 – chickens wandering around, huge recycling bags filled with aluminum cans, many strange housing units jimmy-rigged through cement alleyways – none of them legal. The fog was blowing through, in cold puffs. I felt the hairs rising on the back of my neck.
Also, as I was canvassing an ugly apartment building, I heard a couple arguing about their sex life.
“I spend twenty minutes sucking away on that thing and when you do it, you spend like three minutes,” she was complaining loudly.
“Well, you smell funny.”
“I smell funny? Your balls smell like dirty gym socks –“
“What are you, some kind of pervert?”
Etcetera.
Friends – resist the temptation to discuss your sex life where an innocent Census Worker might overhear you and be tempted to shout, "Haven't either of you ever heard of showers?"
Then there was the mean old Sicilian lady who tried to put a Malocchio on me... I don’t think she could possibly make things any worse than they are now. Still, best to take these things seriously – I came home, took my own shower with my Obama voodoo candle flickering.
Life is not dull!
