Cranes still there. That's definitely a nest, isn't it? There's a third crane too but you only see him part of the time. The nestling, I suppose.

Also some months back I made a Facebook listing. I'm not sure why I did it – I suppose I had some vague idea I could use it to promote the Little Store. My social networking system of choice is and always will be the Well although I almost never post there anymore. Still, that's the group of people upon whose internecine soap operas I came to cyber-age.

Anyway I started getting email there, including some from Max. And a few weeks back got a burst of self-confidence and invited the people I'd been emailing with to be "friends."

Notion of "friends" on Facebook is different from the notion of "friends" on LJ. Here it's people you don't know, may not want to know but whose lives and ideas you enjoy reading about. I'm very loyal to my LJ friends. There it's people you actually know and I've yet to figure out how you communicate with them. Beyond email which you can do already. You "poke" people apparently.

Anyway, Max wrote back immediately: "What do you hope to prove by this?"

And I really didn't have an answer. Is it inappropriate for a mother to befriend her son on Facebook? Maybe it is and I'm just a clueless cluck.

So I apologized to him when I saw him over the weekend – "Sorry, I really didn't know."

My feelings were maybe the teensiest bit hurt but then I remembered my feelings towards my own mother when I was twenty-one, and I understood.

This morning comes the email that Max has accepted my invitation of friendship.

I thought that was very sweet, and I hereby vow that I will not look at his Facebook page.

I was about to post this....

It always sees to amaze 'young' people when an 'old' fella like myself routinely uses blogs/IM/etc for work, rather than sending messages by fax!

You're a scientist, right? What kind of science do you do? Do you mean that you keep a blog instead of a lab book?

Yeah...I'm a scientist type (officially I'm labeled as a biopysicist - which most people say means I know nothing about physics OR biology). I've had a rather strange career (for someone my age still in science).....I'll post about it one of these days.

For the meantime, I do medical research related to cell structure and function and how this can be modulated by drugs (or potential new drugs).

I tried modulating my cell structure with drugs once.

Funny. I've become acquainted with Facebook recently, too. Up until last week, it was on my growing list of Things I Am Too Old For Now. But I used to say I would never get a cell phone, too, and, well... yeah. Slippery slopes.

Upon my signup, I found Facebook's suggestions of "people you might know" to be hilarious. It included an insane ex-boss, a racist cousin, and someone I consider a true enemy. I am not sure yet, of the point.

I definitely think you should "befriend" the insane ex-boss! And think of subtle ways to torture him/her.

Re: facebook and your son - if there's something he prefers that you not see, he'll grant you access to a limited profile view.

I have a Facebook profile, I also have a Myspace page. I check in on both about twice a week but I'm at Livejournal every day.

What do you use Facebook & MySpace for?

LJ is my home page. I love people's stories more than I love them, for the most part. :-) I guess I just have a narrative way of looking at the world.

I use Myspace for telling people about me - what music I like, books I'm reading, programmes I enjoy etc etc, and also keeping in contact with friends and updated with info from bands and other people who use it.

Facebook.... well, I usually use it for throwing sheep at people! (it's one of the options in SuperPoke). I really don't rate Facebook all that much, I prefer Myspace where I can create a page that is all my own. I do blog once a month on Myspace, but LJ is my main blog. Facebook carries an LJ feed which is quite useful.

alice's mother has a facebook, and she has either facebooked or been facebooked by all of alice's friends!

she facebooked me the other day actually, which caught me by surprise- particularly because i had this picture of me from an acid trip at alice's apartment in houston last spring as my main profile picture. but really, i still very much love that she has an account.

i'm also actually facebook friends with all of my livejournal friends too (as they tend to be with their own as well). maybe it's that i've had the same lj friends with long enough to feel comfortable and have actually told them more than i tell most people i know in real life, but i typically feel even happier about being friends with them on facebook than most people who friend me after parties. would you mind if i added you?

my boss, on the other hand, is about the same age, and has serious issues with fb... first of all, he says he gets added by people he wants to avoid, and then poked/superhugged/etc by women which then raises questions for his wife. it's tricky because i think people older than early 20s don't often respect fb as real. if you'll forgive me for making outrageous generalizations - it's just something ive noticed here and there.

can i add you, too?

Why wouldn't I be serious? Twenty-one year old males are boring. Their social banter? Bands, sports & pussy. Ugh. Oh, wait -- sometimes they talk about beer.

Twenty-one year old females, on the other hand, are fascinating. 'Cause I used to be one.
