Maybe the shaman wasn’t so smart after all because in that moment I read the dark-haired woman’s face very clearly. It wasn’t power the woman was after. It had never been power the woman was after.
It had always been love.
Outside on the street some kind of confrontation between two gangs of Hispanic men – MS-13/Mara Salvatrucha. Drive-by shooting. Bullet shatters botanica front window. Kid gets shot – Hazard runs outside to help him. Kid lays bleeding in Hazard's arms. Kid recognizes something in Hazard – before he loses consciousness, he slips off the medallion around his neck and presses it into Hazard's hand. Some kind of saint's medal. Hazard doesn't recognize it.
Lots of blood. Hazard drenched in it.
As the EMTs transfer kid into the ambulance, a book falls out of his back pocket. Title in Spanish. Something by Felix Guzman. Hazard tries to translate it – doesn't recognize it.
Goes back inside. Banter with Genaro about blood. Does Genaro say he should be dead?
Hazard glances at the Maximon. Its eyes seem to twinkle.
