Just Another Day
Nov. 17th, 2007 09:39 amA woman I know slightly organized an anti-torture protest just outside the Presidio gates. I'm conflicted about it. On the one hand, I hate torture which is the reason I registered as a Republican in 1999 – to vote for John McCain over Dubya Bush in the primaries. McCain had been a prisoner of war in Vietnam. I knew he was a realist but also a man of honor.
On the other, I'm outraged on behalf of the troops. I feel for the DLI students, I don't want them to feel any more marginalized than they already do. I know a lot of the DLI kids. They're Little Store customers, chili sauce being an effective way of neutralizing the rancid taste of mess hall food. They joined the military because it's going to pay for their education (they think.) They had very few other options if they wanted that education. The majority of the ones I talk to at least do not support the Iraq war. But they're realists: it's part of the package they signed on for. I feel bad that they're being made to feel bad.
If you want to protest torture, do it in front of the White House.
In other news, an amazing day at the Little Store yesterday, just amazing. We sold out of the embossed chili pepper ceramics, made a ton of money.
I'm deep into Sarah Bradford's Jackie Kennedy bio. Keep looking up every other page and thinking, My mother would have loved this book, my mother would have loved this book.
I miss my mother…
