Dreamed I met a writer who was part of a two-man writing team whose most recent novel had just won the Pulitzer prize.

Gawd! I wish I could remember the novel’s title! We talked about it so much in the dream!

The prize-winning book was the most recent installment in a genre series the pair had done that had started out small but had gradually built up an immense readership. Noir detective stories, I think. But very strange noir detective stories. Kind of like The City and the City.

He was this pleasant, unassuming man in his 30s with a ponytail and a beard, and I’d met him because I was attending a craft show at which his wife was selling stuff.

The wife was a brisk, no-nonsense woman, and throughout the dream, I kept wondering, Why would a famous writer marry a woman like that? He’d be much better off with me-e-e-e-e-e! But he clearly adored her.

Someone was selling hats at the craft show. I put one on: broad-brimmed with a veil and really cunningly decorated, and of course, I adore hats. It would be very easy to steal this, I thought. But then I thought, Nah. That would be wrong. If you want it, buy it. Although! It would be very easy to steal!

And then I saw this tray of jewelry. This incredible gold bracelet with emeralds in these amazing Etruscan settings and matching earrings and I think maybe a ring that wonder of wonders, actually fit my over-sized, sausage-shaped fingers. I wan’ it! I wan’ it! I wan’ it! I wan’ it! But you ca-a-an’t have it!

So, I was making plans to steal those. So easy to slip into my pocket!

I was a mother with many children in this dream, and we all lived together in this hovel. So part of the dream consisted of me wandering from child’s bedroom to child’s bedroom. I’d done a pretty good job decorating these bedrooms in accordance with each child’s very separate personality! So kudos to me for that.

I’m sure the writer part of the dream was influenced by the very wonderful afternoon I spent with [personal profile] asakiyume who is an exceedingly fine writer. We write very differently but there’s synergy there, and part of our many hours of intense conversation was the Process Chat—

Do you write with music playing?
No, I can’t listen to music. I have to write in absolute silence.
I can listen to music, but it has to be instrumental.
Can you read when you’re writing?
No! Absolutely not! Every stylistic trick and word and nuance seeps into the groundwater—
