High Variance Strategies
May. 9th, 2019 06:52 amI’d have a lot more respect for the Brit royal family if they’d named the spawn “Jughead.”
And while Trump is an amoral liar who’s temperamentally unsuited for any job that requires compromise and solid thought, losing a billion dollars doesn’t necessarily make him a bad businessman. Amazon ran at a huge loss for approximately 15 years; most companies that play a high variance strategy do.
Of course, the problem of playing a high variance strategy is that the people who do it have a tendency to become over-leveraged, and this leads them to do desperate things—like launder Russian money.
Which I’m fairly certain, Trump did.
Though it’s not as if I have actual proof. Still. I suspect that’s what the black patches in the Mueller Report are all about.
Meanwhile, I am back from Ithaca but off to the City in half an hour.
Typical conversation between #2 Son and harried maternal unit (Io truly):
RTT (between gritted teeth): There’s a parking space right over there.
PDiL( (assuming charmingly dotty persona): Oh, is there?
RTT (hissing): Yes-s-s-s-s.
PDiL: Oh, this parking space isn’t all that much further.
RTT: It’s the principle of the thing.
PDiL: The principle of parking spaces? That sounds like the title of a short story!
RTT: I simply think you should pay more attention when you drive.
PDiL thinks but does not say, “If you don’t like the way I drive, maybe you should get your fucking driver’s license.” Says: Oh, but then we couldn’t put our lives at risk by walking the additional 100 yards to the diner. I mean, who knows? A meteor could fall on us! Or a telephone utility pole. There’d be someone you could sue—I’m sure I’d be dead!—and that would set you up for life! I’m doing this all for yew-w-w-w-w!
