Erythromycin
Jan. 10th, 2019 10:58 amManaged to make it through yesterday with cheap imitation DayQuill, chicken soup and industrial strength ginger beer.
Hard time falling asleep again.
Woke up in the middle of the night, and my chest was on fire.
This simply will not do, I thought.
Pretty obvious that whatever the underlying cause of the illness, I had developed some sort of secondary bacterial infection on top of it and was now on the cusp of developing pneumonia.
Unless I already had pneumonia.
I always keep a stash of antibiotics. Erythromycin in my case because erythromycin has so many bad side effects—diarrhea, nausea—that, rightly or wrongly, I suspect it’s under-prescribed even though it’s the right spectrum for most respiratory tract infections. That means the evil bacteria who were even now attempting to colonize my lungs—planting their toxic little flags on my bronchioles!—had probably not developed an immunity to it.
So I staggered to my dresser and popped the pink pill. Also swallowed a few Naprosyn for the inflammation.
Staggered back to bed, fell asleep and slept in till 10:00 am!
I don’t think I’ve ever slept in till 10:00 am before in my life!
Anyway, I feel like 10,000% better this morning.
I’m still wheezing, so whatever the underlying cause of the illness has not gone away. Allergies? Asthma?
I was a pretty bad asthmatic as a child. So much so that sometimes, when I awoke in the middle of the night, I used to think, Man, that’s weird music coming from the radio! before I realized, That's not the radio! That’s your lungs!
The asthma more-or-less disappeared for the long years I lived in California, but the Hudson River Valley is a notorious allergen incubator.

Anyway, I will be taking erythromycin for the next 10 days. And I have to figure out a way to get my hands on some more for the stash. It’s getting harder and harder to order from Internet pharmacies. Do they sell it OTC in Mexico, I wonder? THE CRUISE is actually stopping in Cancun for a day, I think.
