Dreamed that I lived in a future where time travel was possible, and I was a member of a karma police squad. My job was to travel back in time and nab people who’d committed crimes against the state—according to the laws of my time, not their own. These people were put on trial and sentenced to excruciating punishments. In my time.

Most of those crimes dealt with genetic manipulation of one sort or another. My time was very big on human supremacy, and genetic manipulation had created all sorts of bizarre human/animal chimerae.

I was after the strange, charismatic man who’d been responsible for the creation of the first of these chimera—a human/pig hybrid, oddly or, maybe, appropriately enough. Laslo. His name was Laslo.

I went through various adventures infiltrating Laslo’s inner circle and eventually ended up having a long, philosophical conversation with him á la Christ and the Devil on that peak in the desert.

“Your methodology is flawed,” Laslo told me. “Really, you should be arriving at an earlier point in time and killing your so-called criminals before they do whatever it was you’ve decided they’ve done.”

“But that would be taking human life,” I said, appalled. “And human life is sacred.”

I had planned to do a bunch of gardening today. Fertilizing. Watering. Mulching.

At 8:30 in the morning, it was 85°, though. I lasted outside just long enough to pick another 10 pounds of tomatoes, maybe half a pound of jalapenos, and a few Brussels sprouts. (The Brussels sprouts have been my special needs vegetables this season. They are not very robust.)

Making tomato sauce is in my not-a-dream future.
