Musette Hugo Explains It All To You
Nov. 20th, 2014 06:39 amThink it may have broken 30 degrees by early afternoon yesterday. Briefly.
But it was sunny and bright. So I was fine.
Did a ton of cooking and a ton of writing. A pot roast and various root veggies, a squash soup with ginger, and an apple pie. The pie did not turn out so well. (I suck at crusts.)
Rather ill-advised to do so much cooking since I actually won’t be around much for the next five days or so, and then I leave for New Mexico. Ah, well. There are people in the house who will enjoy the food, and I felt like cooking.
Finished the first section of the pre-cog fantasy with Ybel, the ill-fated, clumsy young waitress. Dave Ferry jumped out the window as planned, and now we switch gears entirely to the protagonist who’s actually the main character of the novel – the time-traveling Rafe Traverso. He has spent this last iteration working as a journalist so as to establish enough cred to interview the ancient, mad Musette Hugo who lives in a series of vast Fifth Avenue apartments crammed with puppets, dolls, and doll houses.
I think maybe Musette Hugo is on her upteenth iteration and has allowed herself to go mad because she’s so existentially bored with a life that, theoretically at least, goes on forever. But we shall see.
Very tricky to create a character who’s demented but also wise.
Writing. Always an adventure.
