Self-determination, Fireflies
Jul. 27th, 2014 07:10 pmHow exhausted and braindead am I?
Pretty fucking exhausted and braindead.
The pusskers are quite happy in their new home. And so am I – in fact, I slept for ten hours last night. I love sleeping above practically every other human activity.
The week had taken it out of me. Packing and moving stuff, a whirlwind trip to T-burg to help B, incorporating recommended changes into my feasibility study and handing the finished product in finally.
If Pollyanna can find grant money to hire a part-time employee to manage it, the project might even be viable. It’ll never be a huge money-maker – I figure if they use the CSA subscription model, by Year 3, they might net $10,000 K a year and save a comparable amount on food expenses. More importantly, though, are the skills that can be imparted and the fact that gardening is an activity that allows for choices. Most adults with developmental disabilities live in environments that restrict their personal autonomy by limiting their ability to make choices. But self-determination status is positively correlated with a higher quality of life. Gardening’s a pretty pain-free way to acquire self-determination. Anyone with a trowel is king of his or her own garden patch!
But anyway, not my problem anymore.
Before I went to sleep, I sat outside for an hour and watched the fireflies.
