Libya In a Cornfield
Aug. 8th, 2009 12:16 pmJump: Belmond, IA → Tripoli, IA – City Park: 90 miles
RIGHT out of the lot onto HWY 69 SOUTH…
LEFT onto HWY 3 EAST
LEFT onto HWY 63 NORTH… RIGHT onto HWY 93 EAST to Tripoli… arrows to the lot
Shows at 2pm and 4:30pm
It was a long way to Tripoli – try-POLE-ee to the locals – but we were all very glad to get the hell out of Belmond, which was like Children-of-the-Corn Central. I swear I heard somebody hiss, “Outlander,” as I sauntered through downtown.
One of the ugliest towns we’ve been through yet – a hideous blue arcade ran the full length of downtown on both sides of the Main Street. Could be argued that it’s not really Belmond’s fault it’s so ugly – town was wiped out by a tornado back in 1966. But I did my usual thing, looking up old photographs of the town in its 1920’s prime, and you know what? It was ugly then too.
