E writes today about her obsession with the medical TV drama, House.
"House kinda reminds me of Mandel," I commented.
"'Kinda?'" she shot back. "Yeah, so much it's scary."
Mandel's been dead for more than ten years.
For the first years after he died, I grieved him obsessively. Then I stopped thinking about him for a while. After 9/11, I started thinking about him again.
What would Mandel have made of the Twin Towers' fall? Would he have gone psycho behind it like Gerard and Loca?
For the longest time after Mandel's death, I had the sense that he was watching me: he'd prolonged his stay in Hotel Bardo just so he could track me from its windows, pull me from the path of that oncoming bus.
Then one day – poof! He was gone.
The buses still run on schedule.
