Been reading FAST FOOD NATION, an immensely depressing book. What’s depressing about it is not so much the revelation that I’ve been eating shit along with my cleverly processed (and whimsically flavored) laundry starch all these years, but the revelation of just how brutal greedy humans really are. And aren’t we all greedy? Really, what difference is there between Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq and an IBP slaughterhouse in Nebraska? I want out in the worst possible way. Carnivale cruises and the occasional perfect sunset can’t begin to balance the knowledge that we live in a world where there’s so much suffering and pain.

Carry water, chop wood. It will all end soon enough.
