Yesterday was a cold, grey, unremarkable day. I forced myself to work; I forced myself to exercise.
A singular dearth of social activities on the calendar, which may be why I’m feeling low: Nobody ❤️LUV❤️s me!!!!
I haven’t gotten into Halloween this year, which is sad. Halloween traditionally has been my favorite holiday.
Some of that is because Halloween was s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d over five days to maximize its retail value: Last Sunday was the day all the little villages hereabouts held their municipal candy giveaways, a bizarre ritual dubbed “Trunk or Treat.” There will be even more candy tomorrow night.
But what I used to like best about Halloween was that it was a subversive holiday—and it simply isn’t subversive anymore.
Or maybe the problem is I can’t figure out what I did with my skeleton costume, & I’m too cheap to spring $35 on a replacement:
