Molly Cat Does It Again

I would be more que sera, sera about this except on my way back from Kerhonksen yesterday, I passed the mangled body of a black & white cat by the side of the road.
Omen, omen, omen, I am thinking now because, of course, I am the consumate magical thinker.
But no, it was not Molly Cat. This roadkill was ten miles or more from the casa. I think it was the same cat I saw running across the road when I drove up to Ellenville in the morning. Rte 52 is a busy stretch of highway, & I clucked to myself over the animal’s ill-advised bravado: Only a matter of time, I thought.
I was sad to see it dead later that afternoon.
And anyway, Molly Cat was there when I got home last night.
But she is not here this morning.
I think she slipped out when the basement door in the kitchen was left ajar.
The other side of the basement opens onto the yard & is often left open.
The rational part of my mind is chiding, Coincidence! Get that damn animal a collar with an air tag when you find her again.
She’s been here long enough so that she knows this is where the inexhaustible food bowl lives. And this time, there was no dog in the house, scaring her. She got out because she wanted to get out.
The probability equation sez she’ll appear again.
Even though it’s a cold, gloomy day when hope seems as irrelevant & deflated as an ancient party balloon.

Canvassing in Ellenville yesterday was discouraging.
As I knew it would be (so why did I allow myself to be talked into doing it?)
But I stopped in to visit BB & Flavia afterward, & that was the Big Fun. BB is a superb cook and he made pizza and the most delicious apple cake you can possibly imagine from scratch:
I was all walked out from canvassing so no Catskills hikes but did traipse out to see the pond on the property—which I hadn’t seen before—and watch BB & Flavia collect leaves for the compost:
