Depressing article in today’s Washington Post: 52% of Trump supporters actually do believe that Haitians eat cats & dogs.

Maybe democracy is not such a great idea…

Also, one million dead or wounded in the totally pointless Ukraine War.

What is the point of being alive amidst all this madness?

But alive I am—thus I spent a pleasant yesterday puttering about. Remunerated in the morning, & then in the afternoon, went off to explore Ocean Job Lots in Newburgh, the deepest discounter of all Deep Discounters. I literally get sick if I spend more than 15 minutes at Ocean Job Lots ‘cause it has that chemical smell plus hideous fluorescent lighting that gives me a pounding headache, but there’s no denying it has great deals. I scored two more pairs of leggings plus 60 tulip & daffodil bulbs, all for a measly 30 bucks.

Driving home, I got lost.

I have no sense of direction and really should not attempt to go anywhere without GPS.

But during the daytime, I don’t mind getting lost.

And my wandering took me through groves & groves of apple orchards, branches heavy with gleaming red fruit.

So that was kinda cool.

In the Encyclopedia of Wars, Axelrod and Phillips posit that the vast majority of wars arise due to land/resource grabs. Poor old religion gets vilified as being the cause of wars, but this research says that it causes less than 7% of such conflicts. War is about people wanting your stuff. You either resist them taking it or you don't. Pick option 1 and there's your war.

That's v. interesting about the root cause of wars.

I guess it's one more bit of proof (if any were needed! 😀) that I am essentially a magical-thinking primitive, but I do believe every Life has a Purpose. Mine would seem to be bearing witness.

And yes: people's beliefs won't be dislodged merely by facts. (I'm not saying that facts *can't* dislodge beliefs, but just that facts alone generally don't change beliefs. We know this in other spheres! People believe all sorts of things, and in some cases it's a badge of honor that they won't be swayed.)
