The New Side of the River
May. 30th, 2024 08:13 amPassed Iggy-muster.
So that was an enormous relief.
The rent is around 30% higher than what I was paying before. But the rent was never gonna be lower.
Basically, I will be functioning as caretaker of Iggy’s upstate dacha. Hard to say how often he’ll be up: He’s a pretty hardened Brooklynite, and his kids are teenagers—meaning no matter what the custody agreement sez, their idea of a Good Time is not hanging out with Dad.
The new Big City will be Kingston.
The new Big Town will be New Paltz.
Rhinebeck & New Paltz are kinda neck & neck for fabulosity, but Kingston is an enormous improvement over Poughkeepsie.
I will have to make new friends—but BB lives just on the other side of the Shawangunks, so it’s likely I’ll see him more often.
And—this is funny!—another person I was corresponding with about possibly, maybe, sharing a house hates cats, so naturally, I wasn’t gonna share a house with him!
But he found my prose style so enchanting that now he wants to meet for coffee.
He lives on the new side of the river.

All day long, it threatened rain, so I decided I was not gonna mess around with exercise.
I was gonna go to the movies!
I went to see Furiosa.
I’m a long-time George Miller fan—it’s just astonishing to me that in addition to the Mad Max universe, George Miller also invented Babe the Pig and those dancing penguins in Happy Feet.
(I was not a big fan of Three Thousand Years of Longing. Still, it’s better than most.)
Also, he was a practicing physician for some years before he got into making movies!!!!

Furiosa is not particularly good, but the appeal of stale Raisinets and heated Barcaloungers cannot be overrated.

Date: 2024-05-30 02:17 pm (UTC)Furiosa is not great. And I know what you mean about Anya. 😀
My fave Mad Max is still the second one. And I personally liked Beyond the Thunderdome, though most MM aficionados think it's the worst.

Date: 2024-05-30 02:33 pm (UTC)But yes, Road Warrior was seminal. It was THE punk rock midnight movie in the early 80s and we never missed a viewing. The mohawks, the leather, the cars...the anarchy!!! My fave until Fury Road.

(One of the reasons I went to see Furiosa is 'cause I have a kinda thing for Tom Burke. But he didn't do very much in the movie. 😥 )

Date: 2024-05-30 02:35 pm (UTC)Kingston seems like a pretty darned good landing spot, all things considered, although I don't yet know much about the bicycling in the area. We did see a fair bit of infrastructure in Kingston itself.

Date: 2024-05-30 02:41 pm (UTC)Kingston is a great little city. I wouldn't think it would be great for bicycling, but the roads around the dacha (in Wallkill, about 25 miles to the south) look to be perfect.
