Futzing & Pondering
Jan. 23rd, 2024 07:18 am
It was cold yesterday, but not as cold as it has been—meaning temps actually hit the 30° F mark. Plus, it was the only day this week when the weather forecasters were not forecasting rain or snow.
So, I went tromping.
Wintery & forbidding as you can see.
But undeniably beautiful.

I Remunerated some. Since I just got paid a large-to-me sum from one of my clients, I donated a large-to-me amount to Andy Kim’s New Jersey Senatorial campaign.
I don’t live in New Jersey, but I will ❤️LUV❤️ Andy Kim forever because of this photo taken on the night of the Jan 6th right-wing flashmob at the Capitol:

(No, I don’t think the events of January 6 constituted “insurrection.”)
Also, Andy Kim is a graduate of the remarkable Deep Springs College, from which my son Ichabod also graduated.

Mostly yesterday, I futzed & pondered.
I thought some more about moving back to California. There are some parts of California I could probably afford: the extreme northern coastal areas (Mendocino County, Humboldt County), the northern Sacramento Valley (Chico.)
(I could probably afford to live in the Central Valley, too, but I wouldn’t want to.)
The extreme northern coastal areas are heart-stoppingly beautiful, but I think I’m done with isolation & heavy marine layers.
Chico has extreme heat & unhealthy air due to the now-constant wild fires. But it’s a college town, meaning indie film houses & other culture. Plus bicycle-friendly.
Anyhoo, I shall futz & ponder some more.

I caught the kiskas nuzzling this morning!
First sign of mutual affection I’ve ever observed between the two of them!
Mostly they hiss at each other & tussle.
But I guess that’s what siblings do, so maybe I wasn’t sold a counterfeit bill of goods when I was told they were a “bonded pair.”

Plus, the aftermath of the Camp Fire destroyed this town in ways that will continue to decimate for decades to come. I would gladly give you the tour...and there may be hidden opportunities here that I don't see from my mountain. For example, the Arts Commission is ripe for all manner of experience - friends, local shake ups, mounting exhibits...and they have an astonishing museum in the old convention building.

Date: 2024-01-23 05:16 pm (UTC)That cold, beautiful, half-frozen river. Wakanomori and I went for a late afternoon walk on Sunday and passed similar landscapes. At one point I made us turn around because the path we were on, which was compacted snow, was very narrow, and it was a steep drop down to a river like that. I was paralyzed.
Elsewhere, though, we walked on a frozen lake, and I took pictures of people ice skating to send to my friend in the Amazon--things you can't do there. I want to get a picture of people ice fishing, but I may have missed my window of opportunity.
I'll never live in the wilds again either. Growing older, I think we really need people around. I want to live somewhere where I can see kids, families, easily. And walk places.

Date: 2024-01-23 05:19 pm (UTC)As to insurrection, it's not that the assault on the Capitol was itself the insurrection. The plan from the White House(probably not actually Trump, because he isn't capable) was that a riot would trigger more violence allowing Trump to invoke the Insurrection Act, giving him powers the Presidency doesn't usually have, and lead to a takeover.

Date: 2024-01-23 05:26 pm (UTC)You know, I don't actually give a fuck about the Dems' what-iffing viz Jan 6. From my perspective, that's just another form of power grab. What I saw/see is a flash mob, & yes, flash mobs can be destructive. Still. It's a very different phenomenon from insurrection.
I get that we disagree about this one. 😀
