So, this guy wants to interview me about my (in)famous Blair Witch article, which he assures me is still being talked about by fans and filmmakers.
Who knew?
He is writing the definitive Blair Witch book. Release timed for the 20th anniversary of The Blair Witch Project’s release.
My subject actually made it all the way up the food chain, becoming a Time Magazine cover story (!) although the Time Inc. fuckers did not credit me even though I was a Time Inc. employee at the time.
I am very, very proud of that story. It was actually one of the first pieces of journalism to delve into the various ways the Internet can be manipulated, such an everyday thing now that hardly anyone can believe there once was a time when the cetis paribus presumption was that everything on the Internet was true. This was a much bigger story than a low-budget indie movie.
I did all the investigation on my own. Talked to many highly placed Hollywood connections who refused to be quoted on record.
The filmmakers didn’t respond to my requests for a quote. And to be honest, I didn’t request very hard. Not talking to the filmmakers is a violation of some prime J-School directive, but of course, I never went to J-School.
I do remember I didn’t think it was actually necessary to talk to the filmmakers. My excellent sleuthing demolished any plausible deniability they might have brought to the conversation.
###
Apart from that, I continue in my bad mood. It’s been sunny the past couple of days—sunny but cold—so my mood is not quite as nihilistic as it was though I wouldn’t say it’s breaking. I expect I’ll feel this way till February. And then one afternoon around 5pm, I’ll glance through my window and do a double take—Wait! It’s light out there!
And then I’ll be a real human girl again.

The movie made a great deal of money on a very small budget. So, yeah, you know, it's kind of a textbook example for indie filmmakers.

Date: 2018-12-11 05:33 pm (UTC)As for there being light, thank you for mentioning this, 'cuz it reminds me that I have a lamp for that, somewhere in the basement. Somewhere. In. The. Basement. Not quite a Freddy Krueger basement, but things change.

Date: 2018-12-20 04:16 am (UTC)The whole thing wants me only ever to share work by writing it on the sidewalk. No spin, no fakery. (But not much of an audience, either... especially in winter.)

It was crazy when I talked to the guy. The producers are still denying they had anything to do with the "fan" sites.
He kept trying to get me to say something adversarial. I kept saying, "Look it was 20 years ago, and I'm not gonna get in a fight with anyone. People can believe what they want to believe."
Can't wait to see how he quotes me out of context. :-)
