Iowa is not a representative state in terms of its ethnic or ideological demographics. Nor has it proven to be a particularly effective bellwether in terms of predicting which candidates will actually go on to win their party’s nomination.

The Knicks/Warriors game was last night. The Warriors won; RTT must have been in heaven. I remember when I bought those tickets for RTT – 21st birthday gift – the game seemed to be at some unfathomly distant time in the future. And here it’s already in the past.
For years and years and years, the Warriors were the worst basketball team in the U.S., but Oakland loved them.
Now that they’re wildly successful, of course management wants to leave Oakland.

I’ve been watching the BBC’s production of War and Peace. As War and Peace productions go, it’s a goody. Paul Dano may be the best Pierre I’ve ever seen.
Last night was the Battle of Borodino. 70,000 casualties in a single day. Think of that! 70,000 corpses in the same space. Only 200 years ago, too, which was pretty recently. But when was the last time you thought about the Battle of Borodino?
The oddest thing about the Battle of Borodino from the post-modernist perspective is that the generals seem to have made an appointment to fight it. Really! On such-and-such a day we will meet by prearrangement to maim and brutalize and kill one another. Any element of surprise was considered ungentlemanly.
I think wars are ridiculous.
When I read Hemingway, Norman Mailer, Michael Herr, or even Homer, all I can think is, Well, this is stupid! There’s no romance on any battleground that I can see.
I continue to think that World War II was that rare war that was worth fighting, but that’s probably only because my DNA had a direct stake in it.
In the final analysis, the cause of every war that’s ever been fought is tribal identity bubbling up as xenophobia. Which is complete horseshit.
