We are on the edge of what weather prognosticators are calling "a historic blizzard." The winds are wailing and raging inhospitably, but what is falling right now is rain, not snow. Snow is supposed to start later this afternoon when the temperatures drop. I should have bought more scented candles when I was out schlepping around yesterday. Oh well. Also, the Meezer is unaccounted for although her increasingly erratic drop-by schedule has convinced me that she's somehow managed to con some other clutch of humans into adopting her part time.

I've had a very bad relationship with snow since the time when I was stranded in an unexpected blizzard on a cross country ski trip when I was 26 years old. My three companions and I were lost in that blizzard for three days and eventually had to be airlifted out by helicopter. Oh, the stories I could tell of what we had to do to keep warm! Up until that time, I was a veritable snow bunny, but almost dying ended all affection I ever had for the stuff. Now, snow just reminds me of that last line in James Joyce's The Dead:

His soul swooned slowly as he heard the snow falling faintly through the universe and faintly falling, like the descent of their last end, upon all the living and the dead.

No other news to report, really. I dispatched an obligation that had been hanging over my head, making me feel guilty and anxious for two months. I rather thought dispatching it would make me feel better, but a billion other obligations rush in to fill its space.

Oh, well. In 24 hours time, the blizzard will be over. And the temperature next week is supposed to push up into the 40s. I'm feeling as though spring will be early this year and that's a good thing. Forsythia: two weeks! Crocuses: One month!
