The Birds

Every morning and every night, precisely five minutes before the sun goes up and five minutes after the sun goes down, a hundred birds gather in the tree directly in back of my house for a noisy convocation.

They don’t gather anywhere else in the neighborhood.

The tree is completely unremarkable, doesn’t have leaves, fruit, pollen, anything, so far as I can see, that would attract the birds.

They cheep loudly for five minutes.

And then they leave.

They’ve been doing this every spring, summer and fall since I’ve lived here.

It’s the weirdest thing.

Birds do that. They like to hang out together for a chat, and they pick a nice big tree to meet in and they always meet in that tree. :)

As you say, "weird." But birds ARE that way.

When we lived in New Delhi, the MAJOR early-evening event was the migration of many thousands of Indian green parrots (sometimes called "parakeets, though much different from ours in the US). They seemed to have to get someplace northwest of the city by dusk -- every day. (And we never saw them returning south-east in the mornings.)

Birds are brighter than we give them credit for -- lots more intelligent in many ways.

Their version of a Timmy Ho's in the a.m. and a quick beer at the corner bar before heading home for the night.

The specificity is very odd!

Wow. Would love to see the green parrots flying en masse against the bright blue Indian sky!

the 15th congressional meeting at that unremarkable tree. the chirpers have blocked the bill to ban redtails' right to self governance and open polyamory yet again.
