Jackson Mississippi and the Aral Sea

This was a very controversial movie when it first came out – not sure why: It’s a simple, feel good movie about a very complex theme but people are allowed to make simple movies. The most interesting thing about it, I thought, was that one of the executive producers is apparently the United Arab Emirates. Why the United Arab Emirates wants to sink money into a tear jerker about the civil rights movement in 1960s Mississippi is anybody’s guess.
Dreamed about the Aral Sea… I was just standing there, looking at it. A vast desert littered with the hulls of rotting ships that was once the 4th largest lake in the world, on the border between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, during the era of Soviet domination it was drained to provide water for Russian agriculture.
California has its own version of the Aral Sea. It’s called Owens Valley, and I used to drive through it regularly on my way to visit Max at Deep Springs.
When the world’s population hits 20 billion in another decade or so, fresh water will be more important than crude oil is now. Bet on it.
