I think the term is becoming more gender-neutral. It's not always derogatory, and I've heard lots of men called sluts. We need to distinguish between people-who-have-a-lot-of-sex, on the one hand, and people-who-have-a-lot-of-sex-because-they-hate-themselves, on the other.
