Tom Disch On the Other Side of the River
Jul. 6th, 2008 08:03 pmOh this is sad, very sad: Tom Disch is dead. Killed himself on the fourth of July. Does that make him one with John Adams and Thomas Jefferson? That's the very type of question Tom Disch himself would ask.

tomsdisch was brilliant, just brilliant. You didn't read it so much as sip it. It was grappa, absinthe, Eaux-de-Vie...
When my mother was dying I held her hand and whispered, "It's a river, it's a river..." I didn't believe it at the time, and I still don't, but I'd like to believe it -- possibly because I'm seven years older now.
You're on the other side of the river, Tom. Do you see us waving to you? Do you care?
I respect suicide. It's a totally legitimate decision. I understand completely why people disapprove but they tend to be the same people who are bound and determined to suck all fun and joy out of life anyway. Fuck 'em.
Tough on whoever finds the corpse, of course.
Maybe they should pass a law that you can only commit suicide in expensive hotels. And that you have to leave a big tip on the pillow.
