On New Years Day the sky was overcast, sear I want to say – is that a word? – but it was fifty degrees out and the horizon was split with golden light, seep-over from another universe where a different, happier new year was dawning.
Two days later, it’s 11 degrees and the temperature is dropping. Lake Effect snow warning till 6pm. Forecast says temperatures will be back in the forties again by this coming weekend so this may be the only day of conventional winter we have this year. Let’s hope so! Meanwhile I had a refresher course in Bad Weather this morning, shoveled my first snow for the season and had to aim the hair dryer at the little red VDub’s doors for 15 minutes before they’d come apart.
I actually ran out of food last weekend. First time in my life. I wasn’t expecting to have Robin with me, of course, and Robin eats like a 17 year old boy which – duh! – he is. But I hadn’t budged for the extra mouth to feed.
Of course, I didn’t actually run out of food, there are always backup supplies of red beans and rice and pasta and various sauces I’ve cooked and frozen. I ran out of treats, which is to say food that Robin will actually eat. Oddly enough, he’s a very picky eater and he goes through food phases though some staples – yogurt, ice cream, chocolate covered granola bars and untoasted pop tarts – he’ll always eat. There was one month last fall when all he would eat were gummy candies and Japanese algae, the sheets you use to make sushi. More recently it was Cheezits and Bagel Bites.
I actually had to hit Ben up for money to buy food, which was somewhat humiliating though it shouldn’t have been. He’s a kept man. He can pretend money’s a problem all he wants to but somebody else is paying his rent so it’s not.
I get paid tomorrow so Robin and I should be fine. Still, it was a reminder of how closely I skate at the economic edge. I need to work harder.
