The Urban Tarot

I hate shopping. Ever mindful of the brown cardboard boxes Ichabod & RTT will be shuffling my worldly possessions into in the not-so-distant future, I try not to acquire stuff.

But every once in a while, I see something that I must have.

One such something was this NYC-inspired tarot deck:



And the 72 other cards in the Major & Minor Arcanas.

I don’t even do Tarot anymore.

I just thought the artwork & the associations were very, very good.

I mean, a yellow cab as the Chariot!

That’s inspired!

I’d also ordered a bookshelf, which arrived the very same yesterday. Much of my small collection of objets d’art is still in boxes because there is a particular space I want to put this bookshelf in, & I couldn’t find a bookshelf that would fit the space.

This bookshelf doesn’t actually fit the space either, but at a certain point, I decided, Fuck it, you’re never gonna find something with the perfect measurements.

I will make this one work.

It’s just odd that the bookshelf arrived on the day when I found myself thinking for the very first time, This place may not actually work long-term: It’s wayyyyyyy too isolated during the winter.

Other than that, it’s even colder today than it was yesterday. At this point, freezing would seem like bikini weather.

I have a shitload of stuff to do.

My hosts in Arizona had a copy of a book called something like "Easy make-it-yourself storage for the whole house."

If I can manage to wrap up a couple other woodworking projects (rest of the varnish for the new boat, complete the project of refinishing a set of dining chairs, build a new worm bin), I'm going to finally use some planks of wood that I've been carting around since Texas, to make some damn bookshelves for once and for all. S has been making mouth noises about turning those planks of wood into bookshelves, but I'm pretty sure the actual project is at the very bottom of his own very long list of projects.

All of which is to say, I think that's just about the only way a person can ever get a bookshelf of the correct dimensions.

I got really excited when I saw the plans for building bookshelves in this book, because the book does actually seem like it contains simple woodworking projects that can be carried out by simple human beings such as myself. They do still require some tool knowledge and space, but they aren't like the people building custom fine furniture on YouTube these days, which is more than I ever want to do.

I can see how the new spot could be too isolating, sigh.

I admire your resourcefulness & talent for making stuff.

I won't say, "I couldn't do it myself," but certainly nothing in my education or upbringing encouraged me to do it. I mean, I didn't actually know maintenance & upkeep existed until I was in my 30s.

Yah, this place is very isolating in the winter. I'm unsure how to deal with that, but it's definitely an issue.

I've forever been resentful that I never had a chance to take shop class. It just wasn't something my all-girls high school offered. And beyond that point, it takes some effort to seek out opportunities to learn. I think I was partially encouraged during college by roommates who were engineers, who would just get down to business and make things when necessary.

And it's definitely not something that everyone takes up readily. Although my grandfather was a part-time carpenter, my dad had a habit of saying, "I'm not a very handy person," and I think my dad was just never all that interested in building or fixing things.

It's frustrating to me that having relatively simple custom things constructed is almost impossible in this country.
